Blog Tour: Alex Neptune, Pirate Hunter by David Owen

Hello and welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Alex Neptune, Pirate Hunter! You can check out the rest of the tour below.

Join Alex Neptune, the boy with the power of the ocean in his hands, on his second adventure – perfect for fans of Percy Jackson and Dragon Realm!
Alex Neptune is struggling to get to grips with his new oceanic powers…so the last thing he needs is Haven Bay being attacked by pirates in a ship made of rubbish. The marauders are hunting for the missing egg of the elusive water dragon – and Alex is determined to reach it first to stop them stealing its power.
Along with friends Zoey and Anil – plus a clumsy seal, a lock-picking hermit crab and some seriously menacing otters – Alex sets out on a treasure hunt to a secret shipwreck where they must face three monstrous challenges.
Indiana Jones meets Pirates of the Caribbean in this ultimate treasure-hunting, puzzle-solving ocean adventure!

I absolutely loved Alex Neptune, Dragon Thief with its mythical feel and seaside adventure (see review here) and so I was delighted to be invited to join the blog tour for its sequel, Alex Neptune, Pirate Hunter which I am thrilled to hear is the 2nd book in what is to be potentially a 5 book series!  Back in Haven Bay, Alex is once more off on a daring adventure and this time the whole ocean is in danger.  Author David Owen tackles themes of climate change and human impact upon the natural world whilst also creating a fantastic and exciting adventure story that I couldn’t put down.  There was a real sense of mystery and lots of fun puzzle solving throughout the book and I really liked the greater depth into the mysteries surrounding Haven Bay (which completely feels like the seaside towns I grew up in).

One of the biggest things about this second book is the level of character development throughout, Alex especially.  He is hugely suffering from feeling not good enough to deserve his powers from the water dragon and the building of his self-confidence through the power of relationships with his friends will definitely be a struggle that children can associate with themselves.  Anil and Zoey also feature with Anil adding a good dollop of humour.  However, my favourite characters have to be the range of sea creatures that Alex associates with and new and absolutely delightful is Loaf the seal who provides much needed support to the trio throughout their adventure.

Thrilling adventure filled with delightful sea creatures! 5 out of 5 stars.
